FAQs for prospective postdocs

Can I join your research group as a postdoc?

In order to join the group, you must have completed (or be about to complete) your PhD. To be considered, please send me an email (at apiary2011@gmail.com) that contains the following information (in three paragraphs): your PhD program and thesis work, why you think you would be a good match with our group in terms of future research, your expected graduation date, and when you would be looking to start a postdoc. Please attach your CV.

If we seem like a good match, then we will schedule an (ideally) in person talk with the group to present your PhD research and to meet everyone. If we decide to move forward, we will figure out the best location for you (Gladstone or Stanford), whether there will be a co-mentor, and get an offer to you that you can then decide on. I encourage you to visit a few labs and meet with a bunch of PIs before deciding on a position, as the labs may be different than they seem from the outside.

I emailed you (or another) PI and didn’t get a response; what should I do?

We PIs get a lot of email, unfortunately, and sometimes emails slip past us. Please resend the email. If you send an email three times with no response over a period of more than two weeks, I would assume that it won’t work out (about me or another PI).
